Roofing Insurance Supplement Services for Contractors

What Is a Roofing Supplement?

A roofing supplement is a documented request asking the insurance carrier to pay for work the adjuster’s first estimate left out. Adjusters write that first estimate fast, they make mistakes, and nobody can see what tear-off reveals. A supplement adds the code-required items, manufacturer-required items and hidden damage the job actually needs, and backs every one of them with photos, measurements and code references.

We write the supplement in Xactimate, follow up with the adjuster until it’s approved, and stay on it until the depreciation is released. You watch every step on your live claims board.

Who Needs a Supplement?

Any roofing contractor working an insurance claim where the adjuster’s estimate doesn’t cover the full job. That’s most claims. You need a supplement when:

  • The estimate leaves off items like drip edge, ice and water shield, starter, ridge cap, flashings or code upgrades
  • Tear-off reveals rotted decking or damage nobody could see from the ground
  • Steep or high roofs, extra layers or hand-loading weren’t priced in
  • The adjuster stopped returning calls and the claim is stuck
  • The supplement is approved, but the depreciation still hasn’t been released

We handle all types of claims: hail, wind, hurricane, tornado, tree fall, water and fire, on residential and commercial roofs. We work with contractors in every state except Florida and California.

How It Works

  1. Send us the claim. The adjuster’s estimate, measurements and photos. That’s your whole part.
  2. We write the supplement. We review the claim and write the supplement in Xactimate, backing every line item with code, manufacturer requirements and/or photos. Before any supplement goes out, a second member of our team reviews it.
  3. We work the adjuster. We follow up four times a week, two calls and two emails, until the depreciation is released. When code or documentation supports it, we write a rebuttal. We escalate when the adjuster goes quiet or doesn’t approve something they should.
  4. You get paid. The depreciation is released and the money comes in. You watch every step on your claims board, so you never have to call us for an update.

Average turnaround: 14 to 17 days from claim received to supplement approved.

Why Not Handle Supplements In-House?

Some contractors try. Here’s what it actually takes, and why it gets harder as you grow:

  • More than one person. Every claim needs follow-up with the adjuster multiple times a week until it’s approved. Add rebuttals and chasing the depreciation release, multiply it across every open claim, and it’s more than one person can keep up with. You end up hiring a team.
  • Overhead in the slow season. Salaries, benefits, payroll taxes and Xactimate licenses, which aren’t cheap, cost the same whether it’s a slow month or the week after a big storm. Your supplement team is a fixed cost, but claim volume rises and falls with the weather.
  • You can’t hire fast enough for a storm. When a hailstorm hits, claims pile up overnight. Finding and training a supplement writer takes months, and by then the backlog has already cost you.
  • PTO and sick days. When your supplement writer is on vacation or calls in sick, the follow-up stops and your claims sit.
  • Another team to manage. Hiring, training, payroll, and keeping them productive. That’s time you or your production manager aren’t spending on selling and building roofs.
  • No second set of eyes. One person writing supplements means no quality-control review before it goes to the carrier, and missed items you never find out about.
  • When they leave, your claims stall. If your supplement person quits, every open claim waits until you replace them.

Working with Apex keeps your business lean. You get a whole team of estimators, quality-control reviewers and intake working your claims. Someone is always on your file, it scales up when a storm hits, and there’s no one for you to hire or manage. There’s no salary or software to carry in the slow months: you pay 12% of the additional money we get approved, invoiced after the depreciation is released. See pricing

Supplement Questions

12% of the additional money we get approved on the claim. If we get $5,000 added, our fee is $600 and your net profit increases by $4,400. There’s a $150 minimum per claim, waived on your first 10 claims. If nothing extra gets approved, we still work the claim through depreciation release, and the $150 minimum applies.

Not until the depreciation is released. We invoice then, and you have 14 days to pay, so the fee comes out of money the carrier has already released.

On average, 14 to 17 days from the day we get your claim to the day the supplement is approved. We keep following up after that until the depreciation is released.

Three things: the adjuster’s estimate, roof measurements (Roofr, EagleView and similar reports are fine) and photos. The best photos are taken before the build and during tear-off. If anything’s missing, we’ll ask for it on day one.

Yes. We supplement every major roofing system, including asphalt shingle, TPO, modified bitumen and tile, on single-family homes, HOAs, condos, apartment complexes, commercial buildings and historic buildings. We handle every type of claim: hail, wind, hurricane, tornado, tree fall, water and fire.

Yes. Every claim is on your live claims board: each call and email to the adjuster with a timestamp, the supplement itself, the current status, and direct messaging with the estimator working your file.

No long-term contract. You sign a simple service agreement, send us one claim, and judge the work on that claim.

Yes. If you’d rather handle the adjuster yourself, our Estimate Only service is $100 for a roof, gutter and downspout estimate, or $150 for a residential supplement estimate with all relevant line items and photos. You get a PDF, and it’s available in every state. See Xactimate estimates.

No. We work for you, the roofing contractor. We document and submit the scope of the work you’re doing. We’re not public adjusters, and we don’t represent homeowners.
